How to Stay Warm (and Stylish) During Winter

Living in a winter city, it can be really challenging to stay warm while retaining a semblance of your personal style. Cute footwear is often traded in for clunky winter boots, gloves and scarves are by necessity accessorized with every outfit, and chunky knits reign supreme for at least six months of the year. But here's the thing— a few tweaks here and there can actually make your fall favourites extend well into the winter months (like adding grips to your favourite ankle boots), and a good coat can make pretty much anything possible. Want to wear that pretty blouse you bought a month ago? How about that lightweight knit that was in heavy rotation throughout September? The answer is simple, my friends— invest in a good winter coat.

Growing up on the west coast of Canada, I literally had no clue what winter truly was; temps rarely dipped into the negatives, and I can only remember it properly snowing once during my twenty-odd years of living there. Fast forward to present day life in Alberta, and minus 20 is my new norm half the time. Needless to say, it took me a while to figure this whole winter thing out, and I stubbornly clung on to inappropriate footwear and fall coats far longer than I needed to. Because here's the truth of the matter— you don't actually have to sacrifice warmth for style. You can have both and keep your extremities from reaching hypothermic states... who knew.

When you have a proper winter coat, everything changes. Suddenly the mere thought of going outside doesn't make you want to run and hide. You can wear what you want underneath said coat, because you know you'll be nice and toasty without the need to layer three sweaters under that flimsy fall jacket of yours. You can avoid hat-head and ditch the beanie (although I'm quite partial to them), because you have an insulated hood to keep those ears warm. Heck, if you're really ballsy, you can even skip the gloves if you're cool with keeping your hands in your pockets. Such are the possibilities when you step up your winter game with a good coat, which is what I recently did with the Canada Goose Shelbourne Parka (available at Altitude Sports; $925). And believe me when I tell you, I've never known warmth quite like this before.

That's because this parka is filled with white duck down and boasts a water and wind-resistant outer fabric, making it appropriate for temps as low as minus 20— something my plaid Zara coat just can't compete with. The design of this one is quite sleek for a winter puffer, and I opted for classic black so that it can be paired with pretty much anything (it's available in nine other colours though if that's not your thing). Now if the price tag of a Canada Goose jacket scares you, consider the cost per wear— these bad boys are made to last, so think of it as a one-time investment that will keep you warm and cozy for years to come. Definitely something worth saving up for if you also live in a winter city!
