Everyone wants clear, healthy looking skin, but for most of us, reaching that point (or at least getting close) and maintaining those results takes a bit of work. After the gluttony of the holidays, my skin went on the defensive, and it's taking a really long time to get everything back on track. I'm still very much working on it now, but here are a few things I'm currently doing to up my skin game — I hope it helps!
1. REDUCE STRESS
One of the worst things for the complexion is stress — it wreaks havoc on the texture and overall appearance of the skin, not to mention the rest of the body, so I've been trying to be mindful of my own stress levels and find ways to alleviate them wherever possible. Deep breathing, reading magazines, playing with my animals and turning on my trusty nebulizer all help me chill out, and ultimately, help me have a better day. I also find that lighting candles and surrounding myself with anything that's lavender-scented really helps too, especially when it comes in facial-mist form.
2. EAT CLEAN + HYDRATE
Everyone knows the importance of healthy eating, but when you're trying to clear up your skin, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats can go a long way towards improving your complexion. I've been trying to make a smoothy or juice each morning, snack on raw veggies throughout the day and incorporate things like coconut oil and apple cider vinegar into my diet where possible. And of course, reducing processed foods and refined sugars as much as possible helps too. I'll never be able to cut that stuff out of my life entirely, but trying to make better food choices the bulk of the time is good enough for me. I've also been making a conscious effort to drink more water throughout the day and reduce my caffeine intake where I can — all in the name of keeping that skin hydrated!
3. STREAMLINE SKINCARE
I think it's really important to know what works for your skin product-wise — having an arsenal of trusted products can help eliminate unnecessary irritations and get your skin to a place you're happy with. For me, that means a gentle cleanser and weekly physical exfoliator, as well as an eye cream, serum and moisturizer that agrees with my skin. It takes a while to find the best products for your skin type, but once you do, all that trial and error becomes infinitely worth it. Here are some of the products I'm loving right now:
Murad Resurgence Renewing Cleansing Cream | Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser | Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Eye Cream | Pura Botanicals Lolita Face Drops | Mario Badescu Seaweed Night Cream
4. USE MASKS WEEKLY
Weekly face masks have really helped sort out my complexion, and while I have a whole drawer full that I like to rotate between, the general types of masks I turn to are of the clarifying and replenishing varieties. My skin needs moisturizing masks as much as it needs ones that draw out impurities, so I either alternate between both kinds each week, or I'll apply the clarifying mask to my T-Zone and the hydrating one to my cheeks, depending on my skin's needs on that particular day. I think it's important to pay attention to what your skin requires on an on-going basis and switch things up accordingly, and I don't think it would be a stretch to say that I couldn't live without my weekly mask routine — and as a total bonus, they help me relax and de-stress in addition to clearing up my skin, so I'm not complaining.
5. REST UP
And last but certainly not least, getting enough sleep can not be underestimated in the quest for clearer skin — they don't call it beauty sleep for nothing, and as a general rule, we should all be striving for 7 or 8 hours each night. If that's not possible (which, let's be real, has been the story of my life the past few years), I would say just try to get as much sleep as you can — every little bit helps! xx
