Easy Holiday Makeup How-To

For most of us, makeup is such a big part of our daily lives that we can't help but fall into a routine  — or in my case, a major rut. Generally speaking, my daily face consists of base, brows, mascara and liquid liner; then I skip the eye shadow (who has the time?) and opt for some variation of a red lip. Basically, I'm boring. So when I got an opportunity to visit Blushed Beaute earlier this week to help me get holiday ready, I jumped at the chance. We're talking serious makeup artistry here people (these girls know their stuff!), and I left not only feeling super glam, but armed with some tips to help get me through the holiday season while looking my best.
Blushed Beaute owner and founder Elizabeth Bernardin welcomed me with open arms (and bottomless mimosas) to her gorgeous studio space, which would be any beauty lover's dream — think bright and airy with ultra-femme decor; basically the kind of place Jaclyn Hill herself would say 'yaaaaaaaas' to filming in. Fortified with a team of skilled makeup artists and spa technicians under her, there's not much Bernardin's company doesn't offer these days — everything from manicures and facials, to lash extensions and even spray tan parties are on the table — but I'm all about that makeup life, especially when it means someone who actually knows what they're doing is behind the brush.
First up — skincare. There's no sense piling on the makeup when your skin has been neglected, so Bernardin's philosophy is to use a chemical exfoliator (she swears by YSL's Top Secrets Natural Action Exfoliator) followed by a heavy-duty moisturizer and eye cream to give makeup a good canvas to cling to. December can be an especially taxing time for the skin (think extra sugar and alcohol paired with less sleep and cold, skin-drying temperatures), so special attention to skincare is key to looking your best and creating a flawless base.
The biggest departure for me with this look was the smokey eye (complete with false eye lashes) and nude lip... I almost didn't recognize myself! I always love having lashes put on, but I have no idea how to do it myself, so it ends up being a bi-annual occurrence for me — seriously, this and my wedding were the only times this year that I got to wear them! And if one thing's for sure, it's that lashes are a must during the holiday season. In fact, Bernardin says that more is less when it comes to festive makeup looks, meaning that dark party lighting calls for a more dramatic face that's as dressed up as you are — basically, go nuts ladies. Opt for warm browns in shimmery finishes on the eyes, add subtle pops of highlight here and there, and use a playful gloss on top of your lipstick to finish your festive look... and most importantly of all, don't forget to bring said gloss with you for touch ups throughout the evening! Because always remember — there's nothing cute about an awkwardly-faded lip, even in dark, somewhat forgiving lighting.
{Finish the look with a setting spray, like MAC's Studio Fix or Urban Decay's All Nighter, to help set everything and give your skin a nice, dewy finish.}
Thanks for reading loves, and if you have any tips for getting holiday ready, I would love to hear them! xx
